Contextual Portfolio - Iconography/Iconology - Lecture Notes

Iconography
  • the study of symbols
  • identification and description of content of images
  • Byzantine portraiture
  • Peter Burke - ‘Images speak, they are designed to communicate’,
  • W.J.Y Mitchell - ‘what images say and what to say about images’
  • Marcel Duchamp - ‘the creative act”

Iconology

  • the studying of meaning contained within these symbols; the interpretation of the content of images.
  • looks at more than the face value of a symbol, taking into account its context - both historical and cultural
  • importance of historical and theoretical context - Erwin Panofsky - iconologist - ‘studies in iconology’ (1939)
  • looking as opposed to seeing
  • using visual evidence to unlock the meaning

My thoughts

It was useful to get the distinction between the two terms and as a graphic designer these two terms are important to know and understand so after this lecture I will go back over my notes and begin to under the two terms in more detail.
