Lecture Notes - Peter Norris (5/10/15)

On monday's I will have lectures from Peter Norris; this series of lectures will focus on the business side of the design industry. The industry wants you to be independent, self thinking and analytical.

Regret is always more painful than failure - "The Dish" (film)
With failure we can learn.
With regret you'll never know and always wonder.

Looking for placements
If looking for a big company placement, get looking before NOVEMBER! Rather than email write a letter to the company/designer as they will have to open and read it whereas an email can be easily deleted. It is also a good idea to start looking at companies websites to get an understanding of what they do and if you want to be a part of it.

[2 aspects]
Product Orientation: I make the product. Where is my market?
Market Orientation: I have these assets. What do you want me to do?

Micro - Economic
- Firm
- Market

Macro - Economic
- National Economy
- Global Economy

Where ever you go, you need to be aware of the cultural aspect of where the product will be sold as this may affect the design. Can dislocate countries and create wars (know your meanings and cultures).

Need to be able to explain your design, communicate them to an audience so that someone without a design mentality can understand the reason behind the design.

Look at the key issues around the world as these could affect your design.

My thoughts
After attending this lecture it has made me more aware of the business side to design and can't just focus on the design you need to also consider the market and what influences the market and what is going on in the economy. I think that after more of these lectures I will be more aware which will inform my design practice massively as at times I feel I can be in a bubble a times which isn't good for design as you need to consider so much more.
